NWO tech students display skills

High school students from across Northwestern Ontario brought home some hardware from the Ontario Technological Skills Competition held in Waterloo.

The competition sees teams and individual students from school boards across Ontario face off in a contest in which they demonstrate hands-on skills as well as employability and safety knowledge.

More than 1,900 competed in this year’s event.

Top finishers from the region were Christopher Rudnicki of Thunder Bay, with a gold medal performance in computer-aided manufacturing; and Thomas Cooper of Dryden who scored a third-place finish in carpentry.

Kevin Schabler of Kenora and Lucas Stevenson of Thunder Bay placed 10th and 11th respectively in the carpentry competition, while Jasmine Kruschel of Thunder Bay finished 19th in culinary arts.

Grain helps boosts port activity

The Port of Thunder Bay’s 2012 shipping’s season is off to a great start.

Thunder Bay Port Authority CEO Tim Heney said Thursday that cargo shipments for the month of April were up 34 per cent over last year, due mostly to higher grain volumes.

Grain shipments, most of which were carried to St. Lawrence River elevators for further shipment overseas, increased by 250,000 tonnes for the month, he said.

Shipments of wheat and canola through the local port continued a trend started in 2011, accounting for a majority of the increase in grain shipments.

In addition, wheat shipments last month were up 63 per cent over April 2011, Heney said.
As for that trend to continue, Heney said “it’s hard to predict.”

It’s going to be a different year,” he said, due the Wheat Board monopoly on grain sales ending.

Forestry sector gets boost

A research and development project into wood biomass fuel is underway at Domtar’s pulp mill in Dryden.

Natural Resources Minister Michael Gravelle announced Tuesday that the province’s Centre for Research and Innovation in the Bio-Economy (CRIBE) is chipping in up to $6 million to a $14-million project to prove a new approach to converting underused wood to fuel.

The project, says the Domtar-Battelle partnership, has the potential to develop a unique, cost-effective system to create a fossil fuel alternative for vehicle fuels.
Battelle is billed as the world’s largest private research and development institute.
Gravelle told a Dryden audience that the partners are “developing technology with the potential to transform the forest products industry in Northern Ontario.”
“It is a tremendous opportunity that will strengthen the sector and our economy, so that we can continue to support strong communities in the North,” he said.
While the project will not mean new jobs at the mill, Domtar spokeswoman Bonny Skene said “it diversifies the product mix” for the operation.
“From that standpoint, it is a good-news story,” she said.

Make Free Long Distance Phone Calls with Your Cell Phone

Are you a student who’s always talking with your friends or parents long distance? Or maybe you have relatives in other parts of the world? If you want to be able to make free phone calls on your iPhone or Android device check out Viber on the AppStore and Android Market Place.

Viber is a free app that will use your 3G data or wifi to call other phones that have the app installed.

The app is very easy to use.

1. Download it and install it

2. Input your phone number

3. Viber scans all your contacts and lets you know which one of them already use Viber

4. Call any of your contacts that have Viber installed on their phone and use wifi or 3G instead of your voice package. If any of your contacts don’t have Viber installed you can still use the app to call them using your minutes.

Viber also allows you to text to other Viber customers using data instead of texting plans, which is great for international texting as that can get expensive.

Yes, Skype is able to do that same but with Viber there is no registration. All you do is input your phone number and Viber will let you know which of your contacts have Viber installed on their phone and the contacts that have your phone number in their phone and have Viber will automatically get a notification that you installed the app. You also have the option of inviting any of your contacts to get viber.

Why It’s Hard To Find An Apartment In Thunder Bay

The 2011 CMHC Rental Market Stats indicate that the vacancy rates in Thunder Bay has dropped from 2.4% to 1.7%. This means that there are less 1-bedrooms available on the open market if you’re wondering why you can’t find suitable accommodations.

                       2009    2010    2011
1-Bedroom    3.5%    2.4%    1.7%
2-Bedroom     1.2%    1.8%    1.7%

The reason for this increase in apartment rental demand comes mainly from the student population at Lakehead University, Confederation College, Hospital and BioSciences.

Lakehead University has been included in Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities in 2008 by and ranked as number 30 which was an improved from the year before when it ranked 33. See below for details.

We have also noted an influx of professionals required for mining exploration and the geosciences. And, Bombardier remains the global leader in passenger rail technology and the 3rd largest manufacturer of civil aircraft.
